A SET OF FOUR CHINESE DISHES FOR THE JAPANESE MARKET

£2,000 - £3,000

A SET OF FOUR CHINESE DISHES FOR THE JAPANESE MARKET, KO-SOMETSUKE

CHONGZHEN 1628-1644

Each decorated in blue and white with an abstract design of undulating waves, with a brown rim and raised on a short foot, each with a six character Chenghua mark, 15.7cm max. (4)

This type of Chinese porcelain featured shapes and decorations tailored for the Japanese taste, and it seems that even grit and fritting was added to appeal to the Japanese aesthetic. These dishes, often small in size, were probably used as part of the tea ceremony.
