Formerly in the collection of James Lord Bowes (1834-1899), by repute.

Both decorated with complex brocade patterns, one with three roundels enclosing the shochikubai or Three Friends of Winter (pine, prunus and bamboo); the other with snowflake-like medallions; the reverses with further geometric patterns; each with paper collection labels to the back reading 'Bowes Collection. Enamels, No. 120', and 'Bowes Collection. Enamels. No.122'.

James Lord Bowes (1834-1899) was a prominent collector and scholar of Japanese art who wrote several books on the subject, including The Keramic Art of Japan with W G Audsley.
