Of Kiyomizu-yaki type, the rounded body with a wide mouth to the top and three more apertures to the side in the shape of Genji crests (Genji-mon), the emblems associated with the fifty-four chapters of the Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji); decorated in gilt and thick green, red and blue enamels on the crackled glaze, painted with many flowers below rounded clouds and stylised bushes; together with a tomobako wood box inscribed Ko Kiyomizu, nadeshiko zu koro (Old Kiyomizu ware, an incense burner with a design of carnations), and to the reverse Edo shoki no kyoyaki, Ninsei fu gashu kiku zukushi (An early-Edo Period piece, in the elegant style of Nonomura Ninsei, with the design of chrysanthemums) and with a collector’s name.
