From the Estate of a Collector, Heath House, Hampshire, and thence by descent.
Variously depicting figures, animals and landscapes, one with a box; together with two yuzen birodo (cut velvet pictures). Comprising:
-1. a nikuhitsu kakejiku (hanging scroll painting in ukiyo-style) depicting figures in pleasure boats and with Mount Fuji at the back, by Koisozaki Sesso (Utagawa Ikkyokusai Yoshihide, 1832-1902), signed and sealed Sesso;
-2. a hanging scroll painting of five carps amongst weeds by Maruyama Ozui (1766-1829), signed Ozui and sealed Heian jin, Maru uji, aza Chukin (Surname Maru, first name Chukin, resident of Kyoto);
-3. a picture with a pavilion in a mountainous river landscape by Toyohara Zuiu (dates unknown), signed Zuiu hitsu (painted by Zuiu), sealed Zuiu and Toyohara with red pot seal;
-4. another painting with carps signed and sealed Unkei (unidentified artist);
-5. a painting depicting chickens by Kuboi Kakei (1857-1922), inscribed Meiji kinoto-mi shoka, Kakei (Painted by Kakei, in the early summer of Meiji 28, 1895) and sealed;
-6. a painting depicting the Sanbiki no Saru (Three Wise Monkeys) by a follower of Mori Sosen (1747-1821), with an inscription reading as Mizunoto-i, chushun, Katsuyu/Shoyu) daishi narabi ni shosu (This is painted and inscribed by Katsuyu/Shoyu, in the mid-spring of the year of Mizunoto-i) and sealed Katsuyu-no-in /Shoyu-no-in, and possibly Aza Kazunaga and Yokufu Xso;
-7. another hanging scroll painting with monkeys, also by a follower of Mori Sosen (1747-1821); signed Sosen and sealed Morikata / Shusho;
-8. an anonymous hanging scroll painting of Fujiwara no Yasufusa playing the flute by moonlight and approached by the bandit Hakamadare Yasusuke;
-9. and a hanging scroll painting of the God of Good Fortune Jurojin, by Kano Seisen’in Osanobu (1796-1846), with two seals, one reading Osanobu /Yoshin.
