TWO JAPANESE SAISHIKI PAINTED WOOD NETSUKE

EDO PERIOD, 18TH CENTURY

In the style of Yoshimura Shuzan, the first depicting a tall sennin holding a staff and standing on one leg whilst cupping his ear, his face and eyes turned towards the sky, painted in polychrome and wearing garments decorated with bands of key fret and clouds; the other carved as a sarumawashi, the monkey trainer carrying the small primate on his shoulder and resting his hand on a basket suspended at his waist, with remnants of colour, signed Shuzan at the back, 9.5cm and 6.8cm respectively. Provenance: the tallest netsuke formerly in a French private collection.
