An 18th century copy of a medieval ring

£1,000 - £1,500

An 18th century copy of a medieval ring, the gold ring with scalloped border and shoulders extending into small claws, mounted with an oval shaped turquoise cabochon. Engraved with inscription which has been worn to mere illegibility but contains the word 'Flodden'. Size X.

This ring is believed to be a replica of a ring purported to have been taken from James IV of Scotland at the battle of Flodden Field by The Duke of Norfolk in 1513. The original ring was then presented to The College of Arms in London in 1681 by The 6th Duke of Norfolk, where it remains today.

Image two depicts the original ring. Reproduced by permission of the Kings, Heralds and Pursuivants of Arms.

A similar 15th century turquoise mounted gold ring was discovered in the Fishpool hoard which is now housed in the Victoria & Albert museum.
