An opal and diamond set yellow and white 18ct gold brooch by John Donald
An opal and diamond set yellow and white 18ct gold brooch by John Donald, the pierced and flame-inspired brooch is centred with an oval-shaped solid black opal within a surround of five graduated circular cut diamonds. London marks for 1989, with maker's stamp 'J. A. D.' 5cm.
John Donald studied at The Royal College of Art, London and formed part of a select group of designers who revolutionised British jewellery in the 60's and 70's. The abstract designs and novel textures were a reaction to the sombre and somewhat austere postwar styles. New manufacturing techniques and unusual, not necessarily valuable, gem stones were typical. His patrons included HRH The Princess Margaret.
