Our Fine Jewellery auction taking place on the 29th & 30th October features over 750 lots, including exceptional contemporary and historic pieces.
Continuing into Day Two of the sale, we are delighted to be offering a private collection (lots 735-749), which includes an impressive late 19th century diamond brooch, designed as a delicate sprig of wild roses (lot 748), and a late 19th century diamond rivière necklace, set with old cushion-shaped diamonds weighing a total of approximately 45.00-50.00 carats. We will also be offering an interesting private collection of Javanese jewellery (lots 491-501), which has passed by family descent from Mrs Agnes van Gessler Verschuir, the wife of Mr Peter van Gessler Verschuir, Governor of Yogyakarta in Java between 1929-1932.
Our Fine Jewellery sales regularly include extraordinary coloured stones and natural pearls, and this auction continues very much in this vein. We are once again pleased to present jewellery by Van Cleef & Arpels, including two exquisite lots featuring natural pearls of exceptional quality: a natural pearl and diamond bracelet, circa 1950 (lot 717), and a fine natural pearl and diamond ring (lot 755). These lots are presented for sale following the successful result achieved for a pair of Van Cleef and Arpels natural pearl and diamond earrings, which sold for £75,600 (inc. fees) in our April auction earlier this year. Turning to coloured stones, it is a privilege for us to be including two sapphires of Kashmir origin in this sale: a sugarloaf sapphire weighing 2.42 carats, set in a stickpin by Tiffany & Co. (lot 727), and a cushion-shaped sapphire, weighing 3.26 carats, set in a platinum ring (lot 728).
Art Deco jewellery is a particularly well-loved category in the current market, and we are thrilled to be offering a number of pieces from this period, including a French Art Deco diamond tiara / necklace (lot 756), a Louis Maruzzi Art Deco diamond and onyx bracelet, circa 1925 (lot 733), and a Cartier Art Deco jadeite, sapphire, diamond and enamel vanity case, Paris, circa 1925 (lot 729). Alongside Art Deco, there are a variety of other periods also well represented in this auction, with other highlights including an impressive 1960's gem-set giardinetto brooch (lot 675), a Victorian diamond brooch, late 19th century (lot 597), and a Belle Époque diamond and pearl pendant necklace (lot 715).
The second day of the sale concludes with an impressive diamond fringe necklace (lot 757), weighing a total of approximately 70.00 carats.

Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular lot. These certificates may have been obtained by Woolley and Wallis or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Woolley and Wallis and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale, or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.
Not all images are life sized, and weights and measurements in the catalogue are approximate only. It is common practice for coloured stones including jade to be treated to enhance their appearance. This includes jade that has been bleached (usually in acid), polymer/resin filled or dyed, or a combination of any of these treatments. Prospective buyers should presume that all coloured stones sold by Woolley and Wallis have been treated unless stated to the contrary in the catalogue description. Please contact the department for more information regarding enhancement and treatment of coloured stones, and for condition reports which are available on single item lots.
Pearls known and guaranteed to be cultured or natural are described as such in the cataloguing. Where the origin of a pearl is unknown and not guaranteed, it is described simply as a ‘pearl’, and it will be specified in the cataloguing as untested. Pearls described in this way are guaranteed to be pearls and not simulants, but their origin is not guaranteed as either natural or cultured. Items described as ‘seed pearls’ have also not been tested and cannot be guaranteed as natural pearls.
All diamonds included in this sale have been tested using a specialist device that detects labgrown diamonds. We can therefore confirm that the diamonds included in this auction are natural. Any dispute as to the authenticity of a lot, including signatures, age and condition, and as to the treatment of gemstones including pearls, synthetic diamonds and HPHT enhanced diamonds, must be brought to the attention of Woolley and Wallis within two weeks of the sale date. Woolley and Wallis do not guarantee the working order of mechanical movements at the point of sale and beyond.
