STIFF. 7-HRS.), 1939-45 Star, Africa Star with 8th Army clasp, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, War Medal 1939-45 with Mention in Despatches emblem, mounted for wearing, very fine and better. William Stiff, having served in the ranks during the First World War, took an Emergency Commission from the Reserve into the Royal Engineers in September 1940. He retired with the honorary rank of Major. As a Temporary Major, Stiff was mentioned in despatches "in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in North West Europe" (London Gazette 22/03/1945).
