An Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal to Colour Sergeant Thomas Curtis, Dorset Regiment, Victoria (1277. CR. SGT. O:R:C: T. CURTIS. DORSET R.), alteration to unit, contact marks, but at least very fine; together with a Volunteer Long Service Medal to Gunner William Fowle, 1st Dorset Royal Garrison Artillery Volunteers, Edward VII (1244 GNR: W, FOWLE. 1/DORSET R.G.A.V.), edge bruising and possible official alteration to unit. Thomas Curtis was born in Whitechapel, London, in June 1854. He enlisted in the 39th Foot on the 16th of November 1868 and after a posting to Cork he was sent to India, where a ten-and-a-half-year period of service had a debilitating effect on his health. He was to spend the final twenty years in the Army on home service (he was examined for service in the Boer War but found to be medically unfit) and the L.S.G.C. medal was his sole entitlement. In retirement, he was employed by the Army Recruiting Staff.
