Great War Naval interest: a pair of African paddles painted with the ship's name 'H.M.S. ASTREA', one having 'CAMEROON 1915' to a shield, the other 'GERMAN EAST AND SOUTH WEST AFRICA'; each supporting the flags of the allied nations and set within a roundel, length 170 cm (67 in.). H.M.S. Astrea was a 2nd class cruiser launched in 1893. She bombarded Dar-es-Salaam at the commencement of hostilities in 1914, and subsequently took part in the hunt for the German commerce raider S.M.S. Konigsberg in the Rufiji Deta.
