Anglo-Burmese Expedition 1886-89: an interesting trophy, comprising a painted copper gong, 14 in., with central boss and deep rim, a radiant sun to the centre, and round the edge the legend 'BURMESE WAR GONG/ CAPTURED BY CAPT W.A. BROOME 1ST BELOOCH LIGHT INFANTRY OKENABIN 22ND APRIL 1887'; suspended between two carved and painted supporters in the form of standing Chinthe, wooden stricker with a leather head, height of supporters 24 in. (61 cm).
William Arthur Broome was an officer of considerable field experience, having served in the 2nd Anglo-Afghan War as adjutant to the 2nd Belooch Regiment, and in the Anglo Egyptian War of 1882. He served in Burma 1886-89 as 2nd in command of the 1st Belooch Light Infantry, and was present at the engagement at Nga-Kyne, the Forcing of the Nanko Defile, and the Capture of Sawloon. He became a Major in September 1888.
