Frank Wallis Smith was born in London on the 21st of January 1879. He served for seven years in the South African Forces. He returned to the UK in 1905, before emigrating to Canada, where in December 1914 he attested for the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Winnipeg, Manitoba, joining the 8th Battalion (90th Winnipeg Rifles). Smith's Battalion was part of the 2nd Canadian Brigade, 1st Canadian Division, which played a major role in the Battle of Thiepval Ridge during the Somme campaign of 1916. It was during this operation, on the 26th of September 1916, that Frank Smith was killed in action. He is buried at Courcelette British Cemetery. Offered with copy research.
