The engineering prize medals to Alexander Leslie F.R.S.E., P.R.S.S.A. (1844-1893): The Royal Scottish Society of Arts silver award medals (6), 48 mm, bust of Athena right, rev., name and award details engraved within a wreath: 1871 (For his paper on Rainfall and Evaporation), 1872 (For his Paper on the Water Supply of Berwick), 1877 (For his Improved Joint for the Levelling Staff), 1879 ([for his] Account of the Water Works of Dundee), 1882 (For his Paper on the Water Supply of Edinburgh), and 'The Hepburn Prize' (For his Experiments in the Flow of Water), some contact marks, particularly to the inscribed reverses, otherwise good very fine and better; The Institution of Civil Engineers Telford Medal, silver gilt, 58 mm, head of Telford left, rev. a view of the Menai suspension bridge with shipping passing beneath it, edge inscribed (Telford Premium 1883. Alexander Leslie , M. Inst. C.E.), by J.S. & A.B. Wyon after the original dies by W. Wyon, in fitted Wyon case (see E 1206 footnote), wear to gilding on reverse foreground, otherwise nearly extremely fine or better; and a copper-gilt electrotype of this Telford Medal, plain edge, nearly extremely fine. Great nephew of John Leslie and son of James (see lots 60 and 61). Educated at the Edinburgh Institution and the University of Edinburgh. Served an apprenticeship as a lighthouse engineer. Occupied various positions including as a partner in the firm of his father James (J&A Leslie) and as Engineer in Charge of the Edinburgh Waterworks from 1880.
