A large display mounted shell fragment
A large display mounted shell fragment, being a relic of the German naval bombardment of Scarborough 16th December 1914: an approximately 1/3 segment of a German 8.8 cm shell, retaining the corresponding portion of its copper driving band, on brass baluster supports to a stepped wooden base on ogee bracket feet, brass plaque inscribed 'SCARBOROUGH BOMBARDMENT DEC. 16. 1914.'
Scarborough was bombarded by the German battlecruisers Derfflinger and Von der Tann, as part of a larger raid against the British North East coast.
