According to family members, Eric Finlinson was a gamekeeper, and joined the Foreign Legion circa 1980, having taken the advice of a Gendarme to learn to speak some French before attempting to enlist. He served until 1985, she he was taken ill and died on the flight home from manoeuvres in the Central African Republic.
