A small but poignant archive relating to the death at sea of Robin Travers-Smith
A small but poignant archive relating to the death at sea of Robin Travers-Smith, the brother of celebrated artist Dorothea Travers-Smith, who was travelling in the Japanese steamer S.S. Hirano Maru when she was torpedoed by the German submarine UB 91, 4th October 1918, and sank so fast that her lifeboats could not be launched; including a letter to Dorothea, from her brother, dated 30th September and written on ship's headed paper, describing his satisfaction at being on board in relative comfort, and a family photograph including the young man in the uniform of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles).
