John Grant was born in Banff, Scotland, and enlisted in the 93rd Highlanders in August 1854. Joining his regiment in the Crimea after the Battle of Balaklava but in time to serve in the siege and fall of Sebastopol, he subsequently saw action at the Relief of Lucknow in November 1857. Remaining in India he took part in the Umbeyla expedition of 1863. He was discharged in 1866.
