William Gullock was born in St Mary Magdalenes, Somerset, in 1837, and attested for the Rifle Brigade in March 1854. He served in the Crimean War (entitled to the medal with three clasps) and the India Mutiny and was discharged in 1862 suffering from a heart complaint which may have been caused by a fall of earth landing on his back while on duty in a trench in the Crimea.
