King Peppel

King Peppel, King of Grand Bonny, Niger Delta. Manuscript letter in a scribal hand to Commodore Sir R. Mend(e)s of the Owen Glendower (British Man of War), Bonny House, July 9th, 1823, addressed 'My good friend', 2pp., 4to, signed with the King's Mark, obviously dictated and with an interesting use of language, the letter concerns interactions between the local people and foreigners, offensives on the River, the getting of pilots, etc., slightly torn at inner edge.
