Firth (b. 1971) Vigilant and Britannia racing in the Solent 1894 Signed Oil on canvas 74 x 107cm; 29 x 42in This scene, from the early part of the career of Britannia, sees her racing the American yacht Vigilant. Launched on the 14th June 1893 Vigilant successfully defended the America's Cup against the British yacht Valkyrie II in 1893, winning 0-3. She was designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, who also skippered her. She was broken up in 1910.
