Attributed to Sir Allan Ramsay (Scottish 1713-1784) Portrait of Mrs Baxendale wife of Joseph Baxendale Esq. Titled on an old label verso Oil on canvas in a carved wood William Kent style frame 76 x 63cm; 30 x 24 ¾in The Victoria and Albert Museum, from a photo, say that the highly elaborate gown would have been expensive at the time and would almost certainly have been sourced in London. It is possible it is a court dress. The picture dates from the late 1740's. Provenance: Private Scottish family, direct descendants of the sitter, from whom purchased by the present owner.
