Napier (Robert Cornelis
Napier (Robert Cornelis, First Baron of Magdala). Original photograph of Napier in full military dress, standing beside a table on which his hat rests, his sword at his side, with a smudged caption dated 1887 beneath, 140 x 97mm.
Napier's greatest fame, in a long career as a distinguished military commander, was having led an expedition to Ethiopia, during which the British captured Magdala (hence the conferred title). He was also active in India and China and served as Governor of Gibraltar.
