Dürer to Warhol: A Private Collection

Thursday 22nd October 2026. Starts at 14:30pm

This October we are delighted to have been entrusted with selling an outstanding private collection. The sale is remarkable in a number of ways, and testament to decades of thoughtful, focused and coherent collecting. What is first noticeable is the range of works offered, from Renaissance prints to German Expressionism, and from 3000-year-old Cypriot pottery to American Abstract Expressionism. However, despite the range of works, each area of the collection has been assembled with focus and deep knowledge.

A section of the sale is dedicated to the works of David Bomberg (lots 1530-1542), one of the most renowned Modern British painters of his generation. Here there are several early works which demonstrate his early abstract Vorticist style, whilst there are also examples from the later renowned Bomb Store series.

The collection also features works by some of the most significant names in 20th-century American Art, including Robert Motherwell (lots 1572-1578), Willem de Kooning (lot 1576), Robert Rauschenberg (lots 1562-1563), Andy Warhol (lots 1564-1567), Sam Francis (lots 1568-1570) and Hans Hofmann (1556-1557).

Although much of the collection is the 20th Century, there are numerous earlier works, including prints by Dürer (lots 1503-1504), Goya (lots 1512-1513) and Piranesi (lot 1510).

There is also a fine selection of works by early 20th-century European artists, Giacomo Balla (lot 1543), Edvard Munch (lot 1548), Pablo Picasso (lots 1549-1550) and Georges Braque (lot 1554).

The auction will be on view alongside our Fine Silver & Objects of Vertu and British & Continental Ceramics and Glass sales.
