Hamish Paterson was the 2nd son of the Scottish painter James Paterson (1854-1932), of the Glasgow Boys group. He was an extremely talented artist but became an officer in the Black Watch in the First World War and was crippled in both hands at Gallipoli which left him unable to paint.
