Our September sale features over 380 lots of British and European Old Master and 19th century works. A highlight is a rediscovered painting by John Constable (lot 867). Consigned from a private collection, it comes to auction for the first time in over 70 years, and is a wonderful example of the oil sketches that are so prized by today's collectors.
Another discovery is an exquisite portrait by John Michael Wright (lot 825), whilst other notable examples of British painting include an early 18th century depiction of a spaniel by Charles Collins (lot 835), a group of works by George and William Smith of Chichester (lots 849-852), and a spectacular landscape by Robert Walker Macbeth (lot 938). A highlight of the European paintings is a typical example of Rudolf Ernst's work (lot 944), which has remained in the same family collection for well over 100 years.
Included in the works on paper section is a rare work by the Irish artist Susanna Drury (lot 703). The gouache offered here is her only recorded view of London, and works by female artists from this period are extremely scarce. The auction also includes a large group of portrait miniatures (lots 600-660).
