When the present work was exhibited in 1861 at the Royal Scottish Academy, The Art Journal described it as “the best work of its class in the exhibition”. James Drummond has depicted Oliver Cromwell after the Battle of Dunbar, surveying the surrounding countryside, from the battlements of Edinburgh Castle.
