Our September auction features nearly 350 lots of British and European Paintings, from the 15th to the 20th centuries. Highlights include a wonderful example of Antwerp Mannerist painting (lot 125), which has remained in the same family collection for over 100 years. Another early Flemish painting to emerge from a private collection is the remarkable The World Reversed or The Hares' Revenge (lot 120), which shows hares taking their revenge on humans.
Amongst the highlights of the British paintings are two superb examples of John Emms' work (lots 292 & 293), and a pair of pictures by William Elmer depicting young gentlemen with their horses (lot 165), offered here at auction for the first time.
19th-century European paintings are also strongly represented with two works by the perennially popular Alexei Harlamoff (lots 307 & 308), a landscape jointly painted by Johan Bernard Klombeck and Eugene Verboeckhoven (lot 217), and a charming beach scene by Jules Noel (lot 306).
The works on paper are similarly wide-ranging, from Albrecht Durer's engravings (lot 24) to four superbly coloured examples of Edward Lear's watercolours (lots 66-69).
