The Ville D'Arras was built in 1894 by John Readhead & Sons at South Shields for the Cie. des Bateaux a Vap du Nord of Dunkirk (and operated out of that port). Registered at 1,654 tons gross, she was 260 feet in length with a 34 foot beam, and was fitted with engines also provided by her builders.
