Quentin Blake was born in Sidcup in 1932 and has drawn for as long as he can remember. His professional life started with cartoons submitted to Punch and The Spectator, the earliest of which appeared when he was 16 and still at school. He is author of many of his own books – Mister Magnolia, Clown – but is also known for his collaborations with other writers such as Russell Hoban, Michael Rosen, John Yeoman, and most famously, Roald Dahl. He was appointed the first Children’s Laureate in 1999, is a CBE and an honorary doctor of Cambridge University. He received a knighthood for ‘services to illustration’ in the New Year’s Honours for 2013, and was appointed ‘Companion of Honour’ in the Platinum Jubilee Honours in 2022.
