A George III oval papier mach tea caddy

£1,500 - £2,500

A George III oval papier mach tea caddy, attributed to Henry Clay, the front and back inset with oval relief moulded panels of classical figures, the base and hinged top with painted anthemion border, brass loop handle, the interior of the lid with faint outline of a stamped 'ENT', the inner lid with brass handle, 14cm (5.5in) high, 12.5cm (5in) wide. The letters stamped to the lid are probably 'PATENT.' Henry Clay patented his invention of pasted paper sheets rather than pulped paper in 1772.
