A presentation silver mug,
by the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company, London 1916,
tapering circular form, scroll handle, on a raised circular foot, inscribed 'From Douglas Haig 1917', height 11.5cm, approx. weight 10.5oz.
Provenance: the mug was given to General Sir Douglas Baird, and then by family descent to the present owner.
Earl Haig was a close friend of General Sir Douglas Baird, from both Scotland and from India. They served together on the Western Front. The tankard was given to Douglas Baird in celebration of the birth of his son, to whom Haig was godfather.
