A rare Queen Anne Scottish provincial silver thistle cup,
by William Scott, Elgin circa 1710,
conventional form, scroll handle, the body with cut-card decoration of the twelve lobed straps below a central girdle, (some wear to lobes), the front scratch initialled 'I.D' over 'I.B', and with traces of other initials to either side, A?, on a plain circular foot, height 7.5cm, approx. weight 4oz.
Provenance: A Private Collection.
There is one other mug known like this by the same maker, and this was in the 'Made in Scotland Exhibition', at the National Museum of Scotland 25 January-27 April 2008. It is illustrated and written up in the catalogue by Dalgleish, G. and Fotheringham, H., NMSE publishing, 2008, pages 102-3, entry number 5.37.
