Tuesday 16^th April 2019 – Fine Silver & Objects of Vertu

We are delighted to be selling an important private collection of early spoons in the April sale.  Comprising eight lots, the highlight is a particularly rare set, known as The Mambury Set of ten Apostle Spoons, by Daniel Cary, London 1607, estimate £40,000-£60,000.  The spoons are well documented by Commander G and Mrs J How, who were widely accepted to be the leading authority on early spoons.  In addition, the collection also contains three Elizabeth I Lion Sejant spoons, by Thomas Matthew, Barnstaple circa 1580, estimates £3,000-£6,000.

Continuing with early silver, the sale also includes a James I silver spice or sugar box, made in London 1611, possibly by Balthasar Trimson.  The box was on public display in the silver galleries at the Victoria and Albert Museum from 1974 until 2017, estimate £15,000-£20,000.

Once again, a feature of the 16^th April Fine Silver & Objects of vertu sale are private collections, including one of wine labels, one of Irish wine labels and a collection of over thirty toothpick boxes with estimates ranging from £180-£1,000.  There is also a private collection of thirty lots of Russian items. We are also selling eight lots of silver plates, engraved with the emblem of the 54^th Regiment of Foot, and flatware sold on behalf of The Honourable Society of The Middle Temple.
