Robert Devereaux, 3rd Earl of Essex (1591-1646), Captain-General and Commander-in-Chief of the Parliamentary army, oval gilt-silver Military Reward badge, 1642, armoured bust, almost full-face, with sash over shoulder, broad lace collar, and sword to (his) right, above a hand from heaven brandishes a sword, THE SWORD OF THE LORD AND GYDEON, rev., the two Houses of Parliament with King and Speaker, incuse legend, IN THE MVLTITVDE OF COVNCELLORS THERE IS PEACE, 42.5 x 31mm (MI 296/115; Platt II, type D, p. 82), integral suspension loop. Very fine and rare.
