A 19th century Russian silver two-handled bowl and cover, by Alexander Kordes, St. Petersburg 1854, assay master Alexander Mitin, circular tapering form, with an intertwined girdle and plain side handles, domed pull-off cover with a mother-of-pearl finial, gilded interior, engraved with two armorials, on a raised circular foot, diameter 14.5cm, approx. weight 16oz. Provenance: purchased from Payne and Son, Oxford. the armorials are the coronet and quartered shield of the Counts de la Gardie of Estonia. The noble title of this family was granted in Sweden on 10 May 1615.
