A pair of Japanese silver and mixed metal vases,
circa 1936,
tapering circular form, decorated with ducks on lake scenes, inscribed in Japanese, which translates 'Presented to Mr. E. H. Holmes, British Consulate General of Yokohama, 20th July 1936. Arita Hachirô, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ushio Shigenosuke, Home Minister', height 24.3cm, approx. weight 41oz. (2)
Provenance:
Ernest Hamilton Holmes, and thence by descent to the current owner. Holmes joined Japanese Consular service in 1897, and was Consulate General of Yokohama from 1921 until his retirement in 1936.
