South African interest, a Victorian silver vinaigrette,
by Edward Smith, Birmingham 1852,
shaped rectangular form, with bands of engine-turned decoration, the interior with a silver-gilt pierced foliate scroll grille, the cover with an Afrikaans inscriptions, which roughly translates as ' I present/give you this in memory of my E.D Lover/Husband my Sister A.G.W.A.W.K... to R.M.J.W', 'The deceased was in her young age of 20 years and 10 months on the evening of 6 July, Capetown 1854'. Buried 25 07 54', length 3.8cm, approx. weight 0.6oz.
