A George III presentation silver-gilt salver
A George III presentation silver-gilt salver,
possibly by Thomas Hannan and Richard Mills, London 1764,
circular form, shell and gadroon border, later engraved with an armorial shield and inscribed 'Dear Old Rowdie', the underside inscribed 'Arthur Grenfell to Ronald Lane XI April 1893 his wedding day with affectionate good wishes', diameter 31.5cm, approx. weight 29oz.
The arms of Ronald Lane XI, later Major General Sir Ronald Lane, KCB, KCVO, who was born in 1880 and killed in action in 1918. General Lane was of the ninth generation descended from Col. John Lane of Bromley Manor, Staffordshire where the family were long established.
