tapering circular form, central shield cartouche inscribed 'Walter John James 1894', to the back a serpent above a helm surmounted by a shield with a central stylised dolphin, below a motto 'J'ayme a Jamais' in a scrolling banner, all surrounded by scrolling foliate decoration, height 18.4cm, approx. weight 10.7oz.

Walter John James (1869-1932) 3rd Baron Northbourne, married Laura Gwenllian Rice (1871-1952) on the 9th September 1894. James was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, his works were widely exhibited including at the Royal Academy, Fine Art Society and the Royal Society of British Artists.
