maker's mark I.P, probably for James Phipps I, London circa 1782,
rectangular form, the hinged cover embossed with the arms of the Duke of Richmond, the front with an oval enamel cartouche 'Caroli Richmondlæ Dvcis Frao Gibson Armo Mvnvs Pro Meritis. Svis', the sides with weapons and drums and an armorial shield on a blue enamel background, the inside of the hinged cover set with a portrait miniature on ivory of Charles 3rd Duke of Richmond, (1735-1806), mounted with diamonds, length 9.6cm, approx. weight 8oz.
Provenance: A Private Collection.
Purchased from Sotheby's, London, Silver and Objects of Vertu, 11 March 1993, lot 39.
This lot is accompanied with a handwritten note which states 'Given by Duke of Richmond to Francis Gibson, Alice Fishburn married Francis Gibson...' it then goes on with further descent.
