A George III silver gorget
A George III silver gorget,
apparently no maker's mark, Birmingham 1798,
conventional form, the front engraved with the royal cipher of George III below a crown, the sides inscribed 'WLV', possibly for the Wenlock Loyal Volunteers, length 11cm, approx. weight 1.4oz.
The Wenlock Loyal Volunteers were a local militia formed by the Much Wenlock Member of Parliament and local Squire, George Forester. They were recruited in 1798, and consisted of Broseley, Madeley, and Wenlock divisions, but was disbanded in 1802 only to be re-formed in 1803 with 320 Privates.
