An extremely rare Charles II Irish provincial trefid spoon

£800 - £1,200 £7,500

An extremely rare Charles II Irish provincial trefid spoon, with a ribbed rattail, scratched "W.O" [with mullets] on the back of the terminal, by Hercules Beere * Youghal (HB conjoined lymphad, HB conjoined, lymphad) c.1670, 7.85in (20cm) long, 1.4oz. * Literature Bowen, John R and O'Brien, Conor: Cork Silver & Gold four centuries of Craftsmanship published by Collins Press 2005 to coincide with the Exhibition "Airgeadoir" pp.151 NoCS223 which appears to be the sister spoon to this one above, with the same initials and marks. Althrough Hercules Beere in known to have worked at Clonmel, the lymphad marks accompanying his marks on these two spoons are not thought to represent Y??? which would certainly be more fitting for a port than a landlocked town.
