Indian Colonial interest: an interesting late 19th century gold, puzzle-opening snuff box, of canted oblong form with a pivoting, hinged cover inscribed 'W.P. Charsley, M.D. from S. De Soysa ModLr of the gate as a small token of sincere regards,' the base with an engraved approximation of the Royal Arms, unmarked, Ceylon c.1870. 1.9in (4.8cm) long.
*W.P. Charsley was principle civil medical officer and agitator for the cause of establishing a training school to achieve an efficient class of medical practitioners in Sri Lanka and as a result, a new medical school was declared open on 1st June 1870 by the Governor of Ceylon.
