Welsh interest, a Victorian presentation silver cigar case, by C. Cheshire, Birmingham 1892, rounded rectangular form, the hinged cover engraved with a crest and inscribed, 'Presented to J. C. Shaw Esq by The Rt. Hon H. Mathews M.P H.M Home Secretary July 20th 1892', length 12.3cm, approx. weight 6oz. Henry Mathews (1826-1913) Q.C, M.P, P.C, K.C,created 1st Viscount Llandaff 1895 was descended from the Welsh Family of Mathew of Llandraff. He was Home Secretary in Lord Salisbury's Administration from 1886-1892. He was the first Roman Catholic Cabinet Minister since the passing of the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829. He was first elected for Birmingham East in 1886, and was re-elected 19th July 1892.
