circa 1750,
waisted oval form, with alternate panels of decoration, the hinged cover with a pierced and elaborate hinge, and an oval cartouche, with a crest and motto, the oval base inscribed ' Dona: 7mo. Ob: 10mo Feby 1755 atat: Suae 85' plain thumb-piece, the base with an engraved cipher, height 6.3cm.
Provenance: sold in these rooms, 31st October 2007, lot 1235.
The crest is that of Bothwell, Lord Holyroodhouse, a Scottish title created in 1607 and deemed dormant in 1634, although claimed by Henry Bothwell of Glencorse a hundred years later.
