In 1918 the 1st Life Guards was converted to the 1st battalion, Guards Machine Gun Regiment. In 1919, it was reconstituted as Cavalry. In May 1922 the 1st Life Guards amalgamated with the 2nd Life Guards to form The Life Guards.
