A Victorian silver-gilt private-die bread knife and fork,

the handles by Robert Garrard, London 1846, the blade and tines by Henry Atkins, Sheffield 1862,

the handles with scroll decoration and with a crest and crowned 'A', the blade with foliate scroll decoration, length of knife 27.8cm. (2)

The insignia is that of Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, Duke of Saxony and Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who was nominated and privately invested Knight of the Garter by his grandmother, Queen Victoria, on her birthday, 10th June 1863.
