A Victorian presentation silver salver,

by The Barnards, London 1852,

circular form, pierced foliate scroll border, the centre with engraved decoration, and inscribed,

'Presented to John Bulmer Godfrey Esq. Commander of the Ship Statesman by the Cabin Passengers of that Vessel on their arrival in Port Phillip from London as a mark of thankful Acknowledgment of the Professional Ability and Energy and of the Liberality and Kindness Displayed Towards Them by Captain Godfrey during the Voyage, 1852', on three pierced foliate capped scroll bracket feet, diameter 49cm, approx. weight 89oz.

Captain Godfrey was an innovative captain, who at one stage held the record for the fastest passage to Adelaide of 77 days in the ship Constance. He has known for his great circle sailing.

The ship Statesman was carrying emigres, and the port they arrived in was Geelong. When they arrived a dinner was organised in his honour.
