A late-17th century silver varvel,
unmarked, circa 1680,
plain circular form with a push in pin lock, engraved 'Philip Iell Esq of Hopton in cont Derby', diameter 0.7cm, approx. weight 0.75oz.

A Varvel (Vervel) is a falconry term for an identification tag that was attached to the jess on the falcon.
Provenance:
Sir Philip Gell, and thence by descent to the present owner.
Sir Philip Gell, of Hopton Hall, Third Baronet, was born in 1651. He went on to be an M.P for Derbyshire in 1680, and died in 1710.
